Mario De Miranda was a cartoonist, painter and creative genius from Loutolim, Goa. All of his work exaggerates the intricacies of daily life in Goa and Bombay. He created iconic characters, chronicling the lives and times of regular folks, injecting the boring with his deadpan humor. On his 90th birthday, Google bestowed upon him one of the highest pop culture honors: a google doodle. But he also scored a fair number of other awards in his time: including the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan and the lifetime achievement award from the All India Cartoonist’s Association, and a posthumous Padma Vibhushan in 2012, a few months after he passed away at the age of 85, in December 2011.

Mario’s works are housed in an exhibition in the Reis Magos fort in Bardez, Goa. It makes for one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in the sunshine state. Beware of the dog there.

Every drawing of Mario’s has a little bit of India, a little bit of Goa, a little bit of us. Here are a few of my favourites that I picked from his iconic works, and I’m sure you’ll become a fan too.

When you thought everyone else will dress up too. This is Lady Fonseca, inspired by the pretty ladies of Bandra, who worked as secretaries in advertising agencies. She features in many of his works.

When you get on the village bus and the whole village decided to come too.
